In Shuriedo’s workshop in Okinawa, every tool is a unique piece, handcrafted by skilled artisans who combine years of experience with traditional techniques. Both Shuriedo’s wooden and metal tools are the result of a meticulous artisanal process, where every detail is crucial to ensuring products of the highest quality and durability.

Metal Tools: The Beauty of Craftsmanship

Shuriedo’s metal tools are true works of art. Each one is handcrafted without the use of molds, making the process more labor-intensive and detailed. From cutting and carving to the final varnishing, each tool passes through the hands of three specialized artisans at different stages of the process. These stages include:

  • Manual cutting and carving: Each tool is handcrafted to give it a unique shape and precision.
  • Heat treatment and welding: We guarantee strength and durability in every piece.
  • Finishing and varnishing: After a thorough inspection, a black varnish is applied to protect and enhance the tool..

Each of these processes is carried out by a specialist craftsman. As a result, no two pieces weigh exactly the same or measure exactly the same, as it is entirely manual work performed by three different people throughout the process.

Wooden Tools: Natural Beauty and Craftsmanship in Every Detail

The production of Shuriedo’s wooden tools follows an equally artisanal path. The wood used undergoes a lengthy preservation and treatment process to ensure it is completely dry and ready to work with. Once the wood is in optimal condition, our artisans begin the manual processes of scraping, smoothing, cutting, drilling, and carving. Unlike industrial production, each tool is hand-shaped, guaranteeing a unique piece every time. After shaping, the imperfections in the wood are corrected by applying heat, a delicate step in which the experience of our artisans plays a fundamental role.

Red Oak and Rattan Wood

  • Red Oak: This wood is treated with special care, undergoing a detailed manual process that enhances its strength and natural beauty.
  • Rattan: For its rattan tools, Shuriedo uses a highly flexible wood that grows in the jungles of Malaysia. This fibrous material has a simpler manufacturing process, but its unique nature means that each piece may vary in thickness, color, and possible leaf marks. Generally, Shuriedo aims for a thickness of between 2 and 3 cm, but due to the natural characteristics of rattan, these variations are not corrected, giving each tool its own distinct character.

It is important to note that rattan, being a fibrous wood, can splinter if subjected to strong impacts. Additionally, due to the natural characteristics of the materials and the artisanal process, we do not accept claims regarding variations in the dimensions, color, or texture of the tools. The hand-carved octagonal shape adds a level of difficulty and exclusivity, so it is normal for each tool to have slight variations in weight and size. These differences are characteristic of the manual process and make each piece unique. Therefore, the measurements and weights are approximate, and claims for minimal variations will not be accepted.

The Handcrafted Passion Behind Every Tool

At least three people are involved in the artisanal process of each Shuriedo metal or wooden tool, each specializing in a specific phase of production. This ensures that every piece passes through expert hands that pay close attention to every detail. The passion and dedication of our artisans are reflected in every tool, making them as functional as they are aesthetically pleasing. When you purchase one of our Shuriedo artisanal tools, you are not just acquiring a product of exceptional quality, but also a piece with soul, crafted using traditional techniques passed down through generations.
