At Hajime Karate, we take pride in offering the full range of SHUREIDO karategis, renowned for their exceptional quality and craftsmanship. We understand that choosing the right karategi is essential for every practitioner, and one of the key decisions is selecting either a Japanese or European cut. Below, we detail the differences between these styles and their corresponding models.
Differences in Fabrics and Cuts
It is important to note that SHUREIDO’s traditional karategi range shares the same fabrics across different models, differing only in cut. The Japanese-cut models (K-10, K-11, KC-10) have their European-cut counterparts (TK-10, TK-11, TKC-10). This means that a K-10 and a TK-10 are made from the same material but have a different fit. The same applies to the K-11 and TK-11, as well as the KC-10 and TKC-10. This distinction allows each karateka to choose the fit that best suits their style and preferences without compromising fabric quality.
Japanese Cut: Tradition and Customization
Japanese-cut karategis are characterized by a shorter jacket and longer sleeves and pants. This design allows karatekas to adjust the sleeves and pant length to their liking after several washes in cold water to minimize shrinkage. It is a common choice among practitioners seeking a more traditional approach. The standout models in this category include:
- Shureido K-9: Made of 100% cotton, it offers comfort and durability for intensive training. This is a basic model with two main user groups in Europe. First, those who want a SHUREIDO karategi without making a large investment while maintaining brand quality. Second, experienced instructors and practitioners looking for a lightweight cotton karategi, free of synthetic fibers, with a traditional cut—ideal for long training hours without the heaviness of thicker models. Its lightweight fabric allows great mobility, making it an excellent option for teachers and advanced practitioners who prefer a traditional uniform without the weight of heavier models.
- Shureido K-10:Made of 100% cotton, it offers presence and durability for intensive training. It is typically used by both practitioners and instructors seeking a balance between weight and durability. Although it falls within the heavyweight karategi category, its fabric does not feel excessively heavy. It was widely used for Kata before the introduction of the New Wave series.
- Shureido K-11: Also made of 100% cotton, this is a medium-weight karategi, ideal for those looking to endure long training sessions without sacrificing the comfort of a high-quality uniform. Its fabric is the same as that of the TK-11, differing only in cut. It is one of SHUREIDO’s best-selling karategis because it provides the perfect balance of weight and comfort.
- Shureido KC-10: This model stands out for its weight and imposing presence. Made from a fabric blend of cotton, rayon, and polyester, it features a reinforced lapel and was considered SHUREIDO’s most exclusive karategi before the arrival of the New Wave series. Its fabric is the same as that of the TKC-10, differing only in cut.
European Cut: Comfort and Modern Style
European-cut karategis feature a longer jacket and pre-cut sleeves and pants, generally reaching the forearm and exposing the wrist. This design enhances arm techniques and is preferred by many competitors. The models in this category include:
- Shureido TK-10 (Sensei Tournament): Made of 100% cotton, it offers a wide and modern cut, suitable for instructors and advanced practitioners. Along with the K-10, this model was the most commonly used in Kata competitions before the introduction of the New Wave series, which revolutionized karategi manufacturing for competition.
- Shureido TK-11 (Sempai Tournament):Also made of 100% cotton, this medium-weight karategi is ideal for those seeking a combination of durability and mobility for long training sessions. Its fabric is the same as that of the K-11, differing only in cut.
- Shureido TKC-10 (Shihan Tournament): Identical to the KC-10 in terms of fabric—a blend of cotton, rayon, and polyester—but with a European cut. Its robust material and reinforced lapel make it one of SHUREIDO’s most imposing options. Before the arrival of the New Wave series, along with the KC-10, it was considered the brand’s flagship model and the most expensive in the range.
Additional Considerations
SHUREIDO karategis, being made from high-quality fabrics, may experience slight shrinkage of approximately 5 cm in jacket and pant length, except for the KC-10 and TKC-10, which shrink only 1–2 cm in length (provided they are washed according to recommendations—cold water and no dryer). The shrinkage occurs only in the length, never in the width.
In general, these traditional SHUREIDO models, which have been handcrafted in Okinawa for over 50 years, feature a wider cut. Since they shrink very little, they are naturally roomy, meaning there is no need to choose a larger size.
Another consideration for karatekas who work with training tools is that the traditional Japanese cut is preferable, as the sleeves are longer and less likely to get caught in tools, making practice more comfortable.
All these models are available at Hajime Karate, with regular stock from sizes 3 to 6.5. Specific models like the KC-10 or K-11 and other sizes can be ordered on request.
Stock and Shipping Times
At Hajime Karate, as official SHUREIDO distributors, we regularly receive stock from the brand. Products listed as in stock on our website are available for immediate shipping upon purchase. However, models or sizes that are not in stock may take 4 to 5 months to arrive, as SHUREIDO handcrafts each karategi and takes this time to ship orders to Europe.
We keep stock of the most common sizes, which ship immediately after purchase and arrive at your home within a few days (depending on the selected shipping method). However, smaller sizes, larger sizes, or out-of-stock models have a longer delivery time. Still, whether for in-stock or custom orders, we guarantee the fastest delivery in Europe at the best price.
